Fat Albert

Fat Albert, the Blue Angels’ C-130 cargo plane used for transporting crew and equipment to air shows around the country, is currently undergoing a chemical de-paint process here at Tinker after severe corrosion was found on it. It will take crews working three continuous shifts to thoroughly clean the aircraft of all paint, using a stripping agent to remove one layer at a time. Once the de-paint process and sheetmetal checks for any other corrosion are complete, Fat Albert will fly to Hill Air Force Base, Utah, for full programmed depot maintenance and paint. Fighter sustainment

The first F135 engine for the United States Marine Corps' F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter arrived at Bldg. 3001 June 23. According to base officials, Tinker will support the entire JSF program at the depot level for Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps engines. The new speedline to repair the engines will originally have 60 days to apply the upgrade to the engines and will eventually go down to a 30-day turnaround. See the story in next week’s paper.
