Team AFMC, Sexual assault is a crime that violates our Air Force core values and erodes both morale and unit effectiveness. We remain unequivocal in our commitment
to prevent incidents of sexual assault, provide victim care where assault has occurred, and hold those who commit such acts accountable. Sexual assault has no place in our Air Force.

The purpose of the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response program is to promote respect and dignity throughout the Air Force by preventing and responding to sexual assault through a balance of focused education, compassionate advocacy, and accountability.

From May 28-31, the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex will receive a four-day external Aerospace Standard 9110 surveillance audit. Auditors from the Great Western Registrar will perform a Quality Management System inspection of the OC-ALC, excluding 76th Software Maintenance Group. A major difference for this audit is that the certification now resides solely with the OC-ALC. This should be a seamless transition for the production technicians. All changes are at Complex leadership level with new roles and responsibilities. When the audit team arrives, technicians should continue with their normal level of excellence. This will ensure the OC-ALC continues to be at the forefront of aerospace maintenance, repair and overhaul for Air Force Materiel Command and the Air Force community.

Following Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel's announcement May 14 that most Defense Department civilian employees will experience up to 11 furlough days from early July through September, senior defense officials emphasized their goal to reduce adverse effects on the workforce and the mission.

Speaking to Pentagon reporters on background, two senior defense officials discussed details of the furlough, exemptions and stressed their intent to lessen its effects.

One official said it appears that about 15 percent -- 120,000 of the department's roughly 800,000 civilian employees -- will be exempt from the furlough, and that number could rise once issues involving intelligence personnel are resolved.

I'm coming to you with news on furloughs - news that does not come lightly or without great personal impact to our workforce. The Department of Defense has announced that they will furlough most non-deployed civilians for up to 11 days. The furlough period is scheduled to begin July 8, with one furlough day per week for most personnel. These furloughs will continue until the end of the current fiscal year.

I know we were hoping for better news, and I encourage you to reach out to your co-workers to be good Wingmen. We are continuing to work with the community, banks, businesses and institutions to minimize the financial burdens caused by the loss in pay.

In a message to the Defense Department workforce, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel today explained why he "very reluctantly" decided that a historic budget shortfall necessitates up to 11 unpaid furlough days for most of the department's civilian employees between July 8 and the Sept. 30 end of the fiscal year.

Here is the secretary's message:

To all Department of Defense personnel:

As you are fully aware, the Department of Defense is facing a historic shortfall in our budget for the current fiscal year. This is the result of current law that went into effect March 1. It imposes deep across-the-board cuts on DOD and other federal agencies. Combined with higher than expected wartime operating costs, we are now short more than $30 billion in our operation and maintenance (O&M) accounts -- which are the funds that we use to pay most civilian employees, maintain our military readiness, and respond to global contingencies.

Toby Smith gets it and the proof is in his actions; just ask Brian deFonteny or Karl McCausey.

In March, the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex tool program manager attended a five-day Green Belt class. When he returned to his work area, he put his lessons to use and is working on a value-added process improvement.

"We were really excited about Toby; he was pumped up in class, went back to his world and actually did this stuff, which is awesome," said Mr. deFonteny, Air Force Sustainment Center Lean/Six Sigma/Black Belt expert. "That's exactly the mentality we want out there."
